Udaipur - Romance on the Lake

Tuesday Afternoon- December 30, 1997

After lunch we went on a motor launch of the lake in Udaipur. We stopped at the Jag Mandir, an island used as a summer home by the Maharana. According to legend, Shah Jahan got the idea for the Taj Mahal while he was imprisoned on Jag Mandir. The island was featured prominently in the James Bond film "Ocotopussy". The view from the lake was lovely. I took a panoramic shot that you can view by clicking the button below.

For dinner we treated ourselves to a fancy night out at the Fateh Prakesh Palace on the waterfront. The scenery was lovely and the service was great. The continental cuisine, however, was not bad but a little strange in its flavors. Kathleen showed off the new punjabi suit she had made for her in Jaipur. At the restaurant we were treated to fine Indian classical music. I have included an audio excerpt that you may enjoy if you have a high-speed internet connection or plenty of time for the download. The recording is a QuickTime 3.0 File (98 K).

Our stay in Udaipur was lovely and we recommend this city most of all.
