Szymanowski was of Polish heritage and sentiment. He spoke Polish and composed his works in Polish. He was born in his father's country residence in Tymoshovka, in the Government of Kiev (Ukraine). That region had once belonged to Poland. His nationality, therefore, is Ukrainian by birth but Polish in every other regard. He was born on 24 September, 1882 of the old-style Russian calendar. The date of birth given above (6 October, 1882) is correct when translated to the modern calendar in use today.
